Reconstructing Sea Surface Temperature Images: A Masked Autoencoder Approach for Cloud Masking and Reconstruction

no code implementations28 May 2023 Angelina Agabin, J. Xavier Prochaska

We consistently find that at all levels of p there is one or multiple models that reconstruct the images with a mean RMSE of less than 0. 03K, i. e. lower than the estimated sensor error of VIIRS data.

Monte Carlo Physarum Machine: Characteristics of Pattern Formation in Continuous Stochastic Transport Networks

no code implementations4 Apr 2022 Oskar Elek, Joseph N. Burchett, J. Xavier Prochaska, Angus G. Forbes

We present Monte Carlo Physarum Machine: a computational model suitable for reconstructing continuous transport networks from sparse 2D and 3D data.

no code implementations14 Dec 2020 Kirill Makan, Gábor Worseck, Frederick B. Davies, Joseph F. Hennawi, J. Xavier Prochaska, Philipp Richter

We present new high-resolution (R~14, 000) spectra of the two brightest HeII-transparent quasars in the far-UV (FUV) at z>3. 5, HE2QSJ2311-1417 (z=3. 70) and HE2QSJ1630+0435 (z=3. 81), obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

Fully probabilistic quasar continua predictions near Lyman-α with conditional neural spline flows

2 code implementations31 May 2020 David M. Reiman, John Tamanas, J. Xavier Prochaska, Dominika Ďurovčíková

Measurement of the red damping wing of neutral hydrogen in quasar spectra provides a probe of the epoch of reionization in the early Universe.

Disentangling the Cosmic Web Towards FRB 190608

1 code implementation27 May 2020 Sunil Simha, Joseph N. Burchett, J. Xavier Prochaska, Jay S. Chittidi, Oskar Elek, Nicolas Tejos, Regina Jorgenson, Keith W. Bannister, Shivani Bhandari, Cherie K. Day, Adam T. Deller, Angus G. Forbes, Jean-Pierre Macquart, Stuart D. Ryder, Ryan M. Shannon

Chittidi et al (2020) perform a detailed analysis of the ultraviolet and optical emission of the host galaxy and estimate the host DM contribution to be $110\pm 37$ $pc/cm^3$.

Revealing the Dark Threads of the Cosmic Web

no code implementations10 Mar 2020 Joseph N. Burchett, Oskar Elek, Nicolas Tejos, J. Xavier Prochaska, Todd M. Tripp, Rongmon Bordoloi, Angus G. Forbes

Modern cosmology predicts that matter in our Universe has assembled today into a vast network of filamentary structures colloquially termed the Cosmic Web.

Galactic Gas Flows from Halo to Disk: Tomography and Kinematics at the Milky Way's Disk-Halo Interface

no code implementations22 Jul 2019 Hannah V. Bish, Jessica K. Werk, J. Xavier Prochaska, Kate H. R. Rubin, Yong Zheng, John M. O'Meara, Alis J. Deason

We calculate covering fractions of $f_{CaII}$ = 63%, $f_{NaI}$ = 26%, and $f_{HI}$ = 52%, consistent with a picture of the CGM that includes multi-phase clouds containing small clumps of cool gas within hotter, more diffuse gas.

Lazio, Kiyoshi Masui, Matthew McQuinn, Julian B. Munoz, Nipuni Palliyaguru, J. Xavier Prochaska, Andrew Seymour, Harish Vedantham, Yong Zheng

The discovery of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) at cosmological distances has opened a powerful window on otherwise unseen matter in the Universe.

IGM-Vis: Analyzing Intergalactic and Circumgalactic Medium Absorption Using Quasar Sightlines in a Cosmic Web Context

1 code implementation17 Dec 2018 Joseph N. Burchett, David Abramov, Jasmine Otto, Cassia Artanegara, J. Xavier Prochaska, Angus G. Forbes

We introduce IGM-Vis, a novel astrophysics visualization and data analysis application for investigating galaxies and the gas that surrounds them in context with their larger scale environment, the Cosmic Web.

Deep Learning of Quasar Spectra to Discover and Characterize Damped Lya Systems

1 code implementation14 Sep 2017 David Parks, J. Xavier Prochaska, Shawfeng Dong, Zheng Cai

Testing on a held-back validation set demonstrates a high incidence of DLAs recovered by the algorithm (97. 4% as DLAs and 99% as an HI absorber with log NHI > 19. 5) and excellent estimates for zabs and NHI.
